Umbrella bamboo is easy to grow and extremely quick to fill out, making them a top foliage choice for privacy screening and blocking road noise and traffic pollution. Clump forming Fargesia 'Asian Wonder' is even more of a treat, with ruby red stems and olive-green foliage, it gives off an incredibly tropical appearance. As the canes mature, strip some of the lower foliage away to show off the highly decorative stems. A top architectural plant for adding structure and movement to the garden. Excellent addition to pots, beds and borders, it also works perfect against walls and fences where a full screen can be created.When growing Umbrella Bamboo in pots, add a soil-based compost and repot the plant into the new container, then water well and position in full sun or semi shade. Alternatively, plant Umbrella Bamboos directly into borders in any moist, free draining soil. Bamboos dislike poor, dry soils. If your soil is particularly free draining, improve it by adding plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting. Choose a sheltered position that is protected from cold, drying winds. Bamboo spreads via underground rhizomes so is best given space to grow.
