Product Description

Lemon Verbena, or Aloysia citriodora, is an elegant bushy herb with a distinctive zesty aroma that is reminiscent of lemon sherbet sweets. Leaves can be dried or frozen for use later in the year. However, they are most flavoursome when freshly harvested during growing season. Lemon verbena is most commonly used in herbal teas, either on its own or combined with mint. This herb also complements chicken and fish dishes and works well in desserts, cocktails and preserves. Lemon Verbena can be grown as an annual but, with winter protection, the plant will burst back to life the following spring. It is advisable to move pots indoors or provide additional mulch to protect roots during winter. This herb prefers well drained soil and the roots should be kept dry during cold wet months. Aloysia citriodora is easy to grow and is well suited to the back of borders and herb gardens. It thrives in pots and containers, which can easily be moved around the garden to make the most of the plant’s delicious fragrance. Please Note: When purchasing plants please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only - The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Characteristics: A strongly fragrant sub-shrub with lance shaped green leaves and panicles of tiny pale purple flowers. Ideal for use in herbal teas and cooking. Growth and Spread: Ultimate height and spread of up to 2.5m. Care and Maintenance: Plant in well drained soil in a sheltered spot with full sun. Prune back before the first frost and mulch thickly for added winter protection. Be careful not to overwater. Period of Interest: Green shoots appear in spring and pinnacles of small lilac flowers blossom in summer. The plant retreats below ground level towards the end of autumn. Top Tip: Plant near paths and walkways for a burst of lemony scent whenever anyone walks past.
