Better known as a lilac tree or lilac plant, Syringa vulgaris Andenken an Ludwig Spath is a low maintenance outdoor plant that is undemanding and easy to grow. This cultivar produces large clusters of wine-red flowers from late spring to early summer. Mid-green ovate heart-shaped leaves cover the lilac shrub, maintaining interest until autumn, when the plant enters its dormant period before bursting back to life the following spring. Growing to a maximum height of 3-4m, lilac plants are one of the best flowering shrubs for smaller gardens and have been a favourite among British gardeners for over a century. The are renowned for reliability and produce a stunning show of flowers year after year. The flowers are highly fragrant, particularly in the mornings and evenings, and are irresistible to butterflies, bees and other pollinators.
