The plant prefers partially-shaded areas, which offer protection, but allow regular moisture to be available. One ideal situation for this plant is to use a carefully maintained pot that allows for a more acidic soil while retaining moisture, but drains well. With winter protection in colder climates, the Camellia species is easily able to over-winter and provide you with wonderful late-winter, early spring blooms. However, this is why placement is critical for the planting area. In addition to being sheltered and protected for winter, this plant needs to avoid exposure to the rising sun as this can cause the blooms to spoil while there is still frost on the plant.
