Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) Sow Indoors: All year round. Sow Outdoors: March- April. Row Width: 6" / 15cm. Harvest: All year round in pots. Chives (Allium schoenoprasum): Chives are one of the most popular herbs, ideal for adding a mild oniony flavour to a huge range of dishes, from omelettes to soup, as well as being an attractive addition to the garden with lovely edible pink flowers. Chives are easy to grow, and will perform well with the soil kept moist and faded leaves/flowers are trimmed. This is one of the most popular herbs and is extremely easy to grow. The leaves have a tasty, mild flavour which are great in omelettes, soups, salads and cheese dishes. The pink decorative flowers are also edible. Indoor Planting: Sow seeds 0.5cm deep in trays of moist compost, be careful not to over-water. Store in a warm place at an approx. temperature of 13-16-°c (55-60-°f). Growing On: When the seedlings are strong enough to handle they can be transplanted into bigger pots or trays. Do not overcrowd the plants and keep in a warm, light position. Once all chance of frost has passed the plants can be transplanted direct into your desired location. Harden off first. Alternatively, for all year round supply, sow indoors in pots. Outdoor Planting: Sow seeds 1.5cm deep direct in growing bed. Keep the soil moist, and be careful not to over-water. When large enough to handle thin to 6" (15cm). Pick leaves as required.
