The Ends of Religion by Eric Bain-Selbo HARDBACK 9781350045255

Explore the argument that the study of religion has inadvertently made it irrelevant in contemporary Western culture. This book delves into how academic disciplines have dissected religious practices, leading to institutional religion's decline while 'culture' increasingly fulfills fundamental human needs. Discover how other institutions and cultural forms can serve these 'ends' previously met by religion alone. Eric Bain-Selbo presents a compelling historical analysis of the field of religious studies and its impact on the perceived relevance of organized religion. The book meticulously traces the intellectual history that has contributed to the secularization of society and the rise of 'cultural religion'. Key aspects explored include: * The role of philosophy, psychology, sociology, and history in shaping the academic study of religion. * The concept of 'the religion of culture' and its function in modern society. * The separation of religious 'ends' from religious institutions. * Evidence for the decline of institutional religion and its potential future. Summary: ISBN The End(s) of Religion. Book cover type: Hardcover, Language version: English, Written by: Eric Bain-Selbo (Author). Width: 234 mm, Height: 156 mm.
